Commercial surveillance from AWS
All Wireless Security provides surveillance systems for commercial as well as residential properties, including video security and CCTV systems for monitoring a business. Its security experts help you work out which video security technology and camera system suit your location and your budget. Tom Cooney's work covers security systems, surveillance systems and low-voltage wiring. The company also offers access control, so doors and cameras can be planned together.
General guidanceHow a business camera system is usually built
As general background, a networked business system often looks like this:
- PoE IP cameras on labelled cable runs back to a PoE switch, which powers them.
- A network video recorder (NVR) on the same switch records and serves the video.
- One switch port goes to the internet router so the mobile app can reach the recorder. All other traffic stays on the local camera network.
- Point-to-point wireless bridges extend the network to remote buildings and areas where cable isn't practical. Signal strength and throughput are checked during the install.
- Recording schedules, motion regions and retention are set to suit how the business runs.
A good hand-over checklist
Whoever installs your system, these are worth checking before you sign off:
- Every camera shows live video and records
- The mobile app streams on both cellular data and Wi-Fi
- Wireless bridge signal and throughput meet target
- Recorder time is synced, so time stamps are correct
- Default passwords are changed
- A backup of the configuration is exported
- Staff are trained on using the system
Where businesses usually start
- Entrances and exits, with one camera framed tightly enough to identify faces
- Registers, counters and safes
- Parking lots, loading docks and dumpsters
- Stock rooms, server closets and equipment yards
- Detached buildings, garages and gated areas
See the placement guide and the camera types for more detail.
Insurance
All Wireless Security notes that many insurance companies offer discounts to business owners who install a video security system or burglar alarm. Ask your insurer.
